The silhouettes are in pen so that's easy. The sunny highlights were whited out beforehand and then cleared after all the darker colors were down. That technique produces really sharp edges. The larger color blocks were down with more water. I concentrated the paint to do the details.
There's also a technique that I've discovered that I like to call "pushing the paint," but I didn't really use that here. If you have really wet paper you can use repeated brush strokes to create smooth gradients ending in sharp edges perpendicular to your axis of stroking. I used it in the saxophone amoeba painting to shade the drums. Does that help?
